What kind of intuition or psychic ability do I have?
Want to know what kind of psychic you are? Here’s what I wrote for attendees of Everyday Psychic.
What is Intuition?
There are different channels we receive intuition-based info through. They are commonly referred to as ‘clairs’.
Everyone utilizes a mix of these ‘clear senses’ to receive and witness extra-sensory messages.
Very rarely is anyone “just clairvoyant” or “just a medium”. Some folks believe all intuitive messages come through spirits / energetic intelligences. My experience says the answer is more nuanced and complex than that.
I’ve personally only met people who utilize a mix of clairs to do intuitive and psychic service work. All these abilities seem to have developed through a natural survival or developmental need.
INTUITION
As defined in the English dictionary:
A noun.
“(Knowledge from) an ability to understand or know something immediately based on your feelings rather than facts.”
Often there's no clear evidence one way or the other and you just have to base your judgment on intuition.”
A (super) human experience?
Like any other part of the human experience, this is a feature that can be developed, enhanced and expanded through direct or associated means.
Contrary to beliefs, intuition is not a purely passive experience. We can engage it directly and on-demand.
The more we play with it, the more it integrates naturally with our human experience and becomes part of our day-to-day life. Eventually, it becomes our new ‘normal’.
Some people experience messages through passively reading people’s fields, or through unknown spirit messages being interpreted by their own field as simple ‘hits’.
Because we’re so unplugged and discouraged from experiencing this aspect of self in modern society, the common person’s experience of intuition is often tied to a few mysterious, one-off events they remember but can vaguely explain away as some kind of mind over matter phenomena that surely advanced science would be able to quantify but can’t yet. Or it was just luck, or some other form of life chaos.
Intuition is tough for many to quantify. Because our society has positioned emotions as a devalued portion of the human experience, intuition - which is intrinsically linked - has been devalued.
It has also been somehow bucketed in the same category of demonization as ‘feminine’ qualities of the human experience, which are not subject to easy control. Data can be manipulated. Intuition is much harder to falsify, though it is subject to pollution.
In most cases, the growth of intuition is increased through gaining emotional experience and emotional intelligence.
Thankfully, the value of emotions is now being explored by those on the ‘alternate’ edges of human health and evolution. Emotional health is becoming accepted as core to physical ailments, more so than those practitioners of allopathic medicine were previously informed.
How do we receive messages for our intuition? There’s our channels (mediumistic, psychic…), a number of common sources (fields, thought-space, objects, streams…), and a number of extra-senses; typically called clairs. Channels are often labeled as mediumistic or psychic.
Mediumistic is when one is a ‘middle’ (medium) between spiritual and physical planes, and a psychic channel is when one connects to subtle energies within the physical space, including the field, chi, auras, or thought-energy. Sources are literally anything. I’m not even kidding. And that’s a whole document on its own.
For now, let’s break down the clairs...
THE CLAIRS AKA ‘THE CLEAR SENSES’
Intuition tends to work through a mix of these senses, with one or two of them as the main one(s). Artists tend to be naturally clairvoyant. Caregivers tend to engage in subconscious clairempathy, musicians tend to be more naturally clairaudient, and so on…:
Claircognizance (clear knowing)
Seemingly an unconnected-to-reality knowing of things. “I know this person is lying”, “I know I should go down this road, and not the road my GPS is telling me”, “I know these lottery numbers are the ones I should go with”, “I know this phone call is my mum”, etc…
This can be developed when wanting to excel in an environment where knowledge and knowing things is a status symbol, and one wishes to increase their clout.
Clairvoyance (clear seeing)
Seeing in your mind’s eye / imagination. Some may also experience this as translucent overlay upon physical reality, or even actual solid visuals seen by your eyes. Some even see written words, symbols, places, faces… These images will either represent an abstraction, metaphor or literal message. Interpretation is key in the developmental path of one seeking to become effective in their clairvoyance.
I’ve seen this birth from people who wish to escape being present in physical reality, or create new realities. In the escape it’s often a vision by design - or interpreted channel, in the imagination, 3rd eye, or a blend of the two.
It’s in the mental escape spaces we can rapidly develop abilities to create or call in visions to our mind’s eye.
Clairsentience (clear feeling)
The ability to receive messages through your own body, sometimes with an interpreter, sometimes with a 1-to-1 match. Examples of how powerful this can be can be seen in somatic reading; emotional somatic messaging is believed to be the ‘felt’ energy, including injuries, what lays underneath them, and even the state of blood flow speed, heart rate, which also contain somatic meaning.
This extra-sense has been most witnessed - by me at least - as developed as part of a survival strategy to pre-empt the feelings of those around you in a survival-centric family or team-objective setting.
Like all clear senses, this gift can expand and deepen in its ability with deeper curiosity across time.
When in dysfunctional growth environments, kids who are sensitive may develop this to predict a family member’s state of being, so as to prepare themselves for any emotional cues that telegraph their potential safety or danger. Of course, this is common in abusive households where many ‘dysfunctional empaths’ are born.
Clairempathy (clear and deeper empathy, through extra sensory signals)
The ability to receive messages about someone’s emotional state, through a range of your clairs, usually led by clairsentience..
Empathy through your psychic senses can be multi-layered and incredibly powerful.
It is NOT the same as clairsentience. Though clairsentience can be used to receive this information.
Clairsentience is a sensory channel, and clairempathy is an application of the clairs which you can call upon.
Clairempathy can include imagery, sound and feeling, and is an empowering skill for those in care-taking situations, leadership roles and healthy close relationships with respected boundaries engaged. It also requires disciplined energy cleansing protocols.
Clairaudience (clear hearing)
Hearing a message as ‘spoken thoughts’ in your mind, with your voice, the voice of another. This can sometimes come through as actual audible sound in your space. Classic examples can be hearing a short moment of the voice of a deceased person, or the vocals of an animal.
Some hear voices through white noise, fans or other creations that produce a steady, rhythmic fuzzy noise bed. Think of it like ‘audio scrying’.
When I have met strong clairaudients, much like the clair sentients, they were using sound to find cues that would increase their survivability in an unsafe environment. Some folks may also hyper-develop their audio sensitivity as professional musicians, and gain sharper clairaudience benefits as a result.
Clairtangency (clear touch)
This is regarded as a gateway skill by some; touching to open up a messaging channel, but it is also a direct form of communication by beings made from subtle energy, such as deceased beings.
Feeling an actual outer physical sensation, like a hand on your shoulder, a cat brushing past your leg… and seeing nothing to support the feeling is a way most experience this.
These experiences are usually connected to an assumed deceased being making contact. In more harmful circumstances, some can feel and have felt spirits attempt to physically imprint, violate or hurt them. Scratches during angry spirit visitations are commonly reported, as are sensations of a sexual and (typically) undesired nature with beings known as “entities”.
In gentler forms, touching can be used to access information in sacred objects or lands, whereby the clairtangency is activated directly by the intuitive person. This is called Psychometry and is beautiful gift to witness.
I’ve not yet met a powerful psychometrist in the same vein as a master remote viewer. Psychometry is an accessible skill, and like all intuitive gifts, it can take time and effort to expand it to a master level.
I tend to use it for reading the subtle energy cues of student magick candles and objects in shops that I may wish to evaluate for purchase over others. Initially, I developed my version of this gift through feeling out which bottles of wine I would enjoy drinking the most, and eventually expanded that to similar for my then-partner.
Indigenous folks would also use this skill as part of picking herbs and herb amounts to give to others, though many indigenous are well-calibrated to communicating with subtle energies and spirits in a more direct manner.
Clairsalience (clear smelling) aka clairofaction, clairalience
Smelling as a message; a whiff of cigar where no tobacco is being visibly or knowingly smoked. A scent of flowers while next to a large cat litter box in a place where no flowers are present.
Clairsalience is another channel for messages from the deceased; “I remind you of this smell”, or a message using language familiar to you to convey. Example; vanilla may bring you a reminder of a mother’s love and or safety as it was a key ingredient she would bake with, using food as her love language. Therefore the message of vanilla has a tie to love.
More literally, you may also get ingredients for a recipe a passed relative is communicating using smell, as a form of evidence. Sometimes you may get metaphors, like burning rubber as a message to remind you of times when you lived for excitement as a street car racer, and had a pleasant connection to that scent.
I have yet to meet someone who utilizes this clair as a dominant one. Myself and other practicing ‘pro’ intuitives have this as a complementary sense that kicks in during readings when a mediumistic channel opens.
I’ve also seen a few medical mediums - people who can deeply diagnose health in the body, receiving information often from spirits who can speak doctor - utilize clair salience and clairgustance as additional ways of describing imbalances in the body; smelling sulfur in the liver, or metal when scanning the blood.
Clairgustance (clear tasting)
Taste is often used as a channel for medical mediums; “I can taste the metal in your liver, so may need to take supplements to clear excess heavy metals”. Some have signals about emotions coming through as taste.
For example, happiness being communicated through chocolate, vanilla or similar. Others can experience metaphor through flavors depending on their individual relationship with those flavors. Example, if I taste marzipan, that could be a metaphor for a place I used to go to as a kid which I hated, so it could be giving me a message about a location that the person doesn’t feel safe or welcome in.
As with all clear senses, it can serve to give us a literal or metaphorical message to deliver to self or another. I would expect food critics and chefs who open their extra sensory abilities in flavor sensitivity would have this clair dialed-in nicely.
Mediumship
Not so much a clair in the traditional sense - rather a channel to source messages. Mediumistic connection has a range of depth in ability which allows one to experience spirit messaging through grades of embodiment.
At the lightest level, it’s subtle impulses and messages through your clairs that are from a specific personality. At a deeper level, it’s full-on possessions that make you genuinely feel you are the being! It can be very confusing when first experienced!
Channelers come in many forms, and as a ‘mid-channel’ between the material and the spiritual realms, you can become a messenger to inspire, help and heal others. It’s a delicate skill-set and requires disciplined practice, care, diligent energetic hygiene and strong embodied ethics.
This is why great mediums are a highly valued type of intuitive and often charge $500 and up for a 30 min session. The level of healing they can provide through conversing with the deceased, or channeling powerful beings with knowledge not of this Earth, is significant.
“Downloads” are a more common and light form of mediumship, but incredibly common, poorly-managed and mis-used as a label of having an actual skill in a useful state.
Speaking the deceased through you, or trance mediumship, is a more advanced application of mediumship and comes with a number of interesting life challenges.
Which clairs do you experience regularly?
We all have clair biases and knowing yours will give you a sense of deepening the relationship to self.
What of Telepathy and other less-discussed phenomena?
A bigger topic, but a phenomena I’ve only experienced with people I have close relationships with, or happen to be on a ‘similar wavelength’ to. So far, my take on it is that you feel open enough to the person to hear their ‘thoughts’ and they can hear your’s, but that’s an oversimplification.
